Tech Innovators MyWebGrocer, and FairPoint Sponsor 24-hour HackVT
Winooski, VT – On October 19 and 20, the 2nd annual Vermont Hackathon will be held at Winooski’s Champlain Mill. The 24-hour event will challenge participants to create a digital product, app, website or widget to benefit the Vermont community. This is the first hackathon in the U.S. to benefit a state.  Competitors will have the chance to win $10,000 in cash and prizes. Presenting sponsors include MyWebGrocer, and FairPoint Communications.
Governor Peter Shumlin will officially declare October as ‘Tech Month in Vermont’ in anticipation of the Hackathon and the annual Vermont Tech Jam, which also will be hosted at the Champlain Mill in October. Governor Shumlin spoke about the importance of creating a tech hub for Vermont, saying, “These events and initiatives from some of our state’s major employers are a great way to continue fostering a tech community in Vermont. Tech is a growing industry with increasing potential, and we’re so proud to offer amazing jobs and opportunities in our great state.”
The Hackathon will start at 6:00 p.m. on October 19, when participants will gather at the Champlain Mill and begin 24 hours of app development. This year competitors will have access to open source data sets on topics such as public transit, population density, and regional distribution of breweries, all with the goal of creating something useful for the Vermont community.
Apps will be judged on innovation, user experience, presentation quality, ambition and execution. Five individuals will judge the criteria, all of whom are from Vermont and are established in the tech community, including: John Cohn from IBM; Julie Lerman of VT.NET; Rich Nadworny from Digalicious; Justin Cutroni from Google; and Cairn Cross of Fresh Tracks Capital.
Returning sponsors from last year include C2 and Leonardo’s Pizza. Many local Vermont companies will be providing food and prizes throughout the Hackathon. For more information or to register as a participant, visit Registration to participate closes October 12.
