Third Annual Hackathon Sponsored by Area Tech Leaders MyWebGrocer, Dealer.com, FairPoint Communications and C2
WINOOSKI, VT — On October 11 and 12, the third annual Vermont Hackathon will kick-off at MyWebGrocer’s headquarters, the historic Champlain Mill in Winooski. The 24-hour event will challenge participants to create a digital product, app, website or widget to benefit the Vermont community while competing to win more than $10,000 in cash and prizes. Presenting sponsors include MyWebGrocer, Dealer.com, FairPoint Communications and C2.
October has once again been officially declared ‘Tech Month in Vermont” by Governor Peter Shumlin in anticipation of HackVT, the annual Vermont Tech Jam, and other local events taking place during the month of October that promote the Vermont technology community.
Speaking to the importance of expanding the technology sector in Vermont, Governor Shumlin said, “Events like HackVT are a great way to demonstrate the vitality of Vermont’s growing tech community, I am glad to see so many prominent local companies showing their support. Tech is a growing industry with unbridled potential, and Vermont is proud to offer amazing jobs and opportunities in our state.”
HackVT will kick-off at 6:00 p.m. on October 11, with teams of up to five participants gathering at the Champlain Mill to begin 24 hours of hacking, app development and creative thinking. Once again, data sets will be provided that focus on a variety of topics relevant to the state of Vermont ranging from agriculture networks to real estate trends. Competitors will work with the primary goal being to create something useful for the Vermont community.
Judges will evaluate the apps based on how well the content expresses a Vermont theme or pertains to a Vermont audience, innovation and newness of its capabilities, user experience, presentation quality and overall quality of the app’s functionality. Five Vermonters with established credentials in the tech community will serve as judges, including: John Cohn, fellow and chief scientist of IBM; Julie Lerman, VT.NET user group leader; Rich Nadworny, digital strategist at Digalicious; Justin Cutroni, analytics advocate at Google; and Cairn Cross, co-founder of Fresh Tracks Capital.
More than 30 Vermont businesses are sponsoring this year’s HackVT, and many more local companies will be providing food and prizes throughout the event. Interested participants should sign-up as soon as possible as space is limited and registration is quickly filling up. For a full list of sponsors and to register a team, visit www.hackvt.com.
